We’ve all had a splinter at least once in our life, children tent to get them more while they’re out playing. To a child a splinter can be very daunting, seeing that little piece of wood sticking out of the skin.

Always make sure you wash your hands and the affected area before following through with any of these steps as you don’t want it getting infected. Make sure the room is well lit and try using a magnifying glass when getting to the splinter.

Sticky tape method

For this you’ll need some very sticky tape like duct tape or packing tape. Touch the area gently with the tape to try and catch the splinter, make sure you do this slowly as you don’t want the splinter going further into your skin. Next, once the tape has a hold of the splinter, pull the tape off your skin and the splinter should be still stuck to the tape and removed from your skin.

Tweezers

This is best for when there is a small splinter still showing out of your skin. You’ll need rubbing alcohol for this along with some tweezers and a cotton ball. Firstly disinfect the tweezers by rubbing the alcohol on them with the cotton ball. Next use the tweezers to grab the splinter (this is where a magnifying glass comes in handy), make sure you pull the splinter out the same direction it went in to avoid breaking the splinter.

Tweezers and a needle

This method is for when the splinter has gone under the skin. Firstly, like in the previous method, disinfect your tweezers and now your needle with alcohol using a cotton ball. Gently prod at the effected area with the needle, breaking the skin if necessary to expose the splinter, get your tweezers ready to get the splinter out, remembering to pull the same direction it went in.
